The first encounter with Citadel brings about the irresistible appeal of open space. Citadel is the largest city park in Poznań, with the admirable area of approximately 100 ha.
The Weaponry Museum and the Museum of the Poznań Army attract tourists, particularly the army and military enthusiasts.
The largest open air work of Poznań’s Małgorzata Abakanowicz has been installed in the park. A highly distinguished professor of the University of Arts in Poznań, currently no longer with us, is the author of the “Nierozpoznani” [Unrecognised] installation. The work consists of multiple brown statues presenting headless human figures.
In the southern part of the park there are also military cemeteries, more and more hidden from the world by nature. The majority of graves are neglected even though numerous heroes who fought for freedom of this land are buried there, such as those who fought in the Greater Poland uprising and the Invasion of Poland, also known as the September campaign.
