In Porta Posnania one can learn about the history of the Cathedral Island [Ostrów Tumski], particularly about the part that the place played during the time when the Polish State was born.
The Centre presents history in such a way as to attract and intrigue guests, encouraging them to visit the historical buildings of the Cathedral Island. The Centre allows visitors to learn about the times of Mieszko I and Bolesław I the Brave, as well as about the life of other residents of the Cathedral Island who had been shaping the place for over a thousand years. Multimedia presentations, film screenings, interactive devices, mock-ups, and visualisations take viewers back in time to the crucial events in the history of the Cathedral Island. The exposition engages all the senses, providing viewers with full understanding of the reality of the 10th century and subsequent periods in history. To be able to meet all needs of visitors there are several visiting paths and a special visiting programme for children, based on games and fun. Porta Posnania is connected with the abutment of the Cathedral Lock, located on the opposite side of the river and being the only preserved element of fortification of the Cathedral Island. The building was renovated and adapted to the needs of tourists. Leaving Porta Posnania, tourists walk across a footbridge, heading directly towards the Cathedral and other historical buildings of the Cathedral Island. Porta Posnania is also a gate that opens to the Royal-Imperial Route in Poznań.
